How to Fix Low Water Pressure from a Well: What to Check First

What Causes Low Water Pressure from a Well?

Low water pressure from a well usually points to one of three things: a failing pump, a clogged filter or treatment system, or a pressure tank that has lost its air charge. I'm Eli, a Certified Water Specialist with over 20 years of hands-on experience installing and servicing well systems. In most homes, the problem isn't the well itself. It's something between the well and the tap that's restricting flow or failing to maintain system pressure.

The first step is figuring out whether the pressure drop is sudden or gradual. Sudden loss often means a failed component. Gradual decline usually points to sediment buildup, iron fouling, or a bladder tank losing pressure. Either way, you need to isolate the cause before replacing anything.

Check the Pressure Tank First

The pressure tank is often the culprit. These tanks use an internal bladder or diaphragm to hold air pressure, which pushes water through the house when the pump isn't running. Over time, that air charge can leak out. When it does, the pump cycles more frequently and pressure drops noticeably at the tap.

To check it, turn off power to the pump and drain the system. Use a tire pressure gauge on the air valve at the top of the tank. Most residential tanks should read between 38 and 42 PSI when empty. If it reads low or zero, the bladder may be waterlogged or ruptured. You can try adding air with a compressor, but if it doesn't hold, the tank needs replacement.

Inspect Filters and Treatment Systems for Clogs

If you have a sediment filter, iron filter, or softener on the line, check those next. Sediment and iron buildup restrict flow. If your system has a bypass valve, try closing the inlet and outlet to the treatment equipment and opening the bypass. If pressure improves immediately, the problem is in that system. Replace cartridges, backwash the media, or clean the distributor tube. Don't ignore this step. A clogged filter can make a perfectly good pump look like it's failing.

Test the Pump and Pressure Switch

If the tank and filters check out, the pump or pressure switch may be the issue. Submersible well pumps don't usually fail gradually. They either work or they don't. But the pressure switch, which tells the pump when to turn on and off, can drift out of calibration or get corroded.

Check the switch settings. Most are factory-set to cut in at 40 PSI and cut out at 60 PSI. If those settings have drifted or the contacts are dirty, the pump may not be building enough pressure before it shuts off. You can adjust the range with the nut on top of the switch, but be careful. Raising the cutoff too high can overwork the pump or damage plumbing.

If the pump runs continuously and never reaches cutoff pressure, it may be worn out, undersized for your household demand, or pulling air due to a low water table. That's when you need a pump technician, not a filter change.

Sometimes the well system is working fine, but the house demand has outgrown the original design. Adding bathrooms, irrigation zones, or water treatment equipment increases flow requirements.
