Check that the unit is plugged in, the outlet is live, and the display shows the correct time. If your valve uses a mechanical timer, make sure the dial hasn't been bumped or the tabs that trigger regeneration are still in place. On metered valves, verify the meter is counting gallons. If it's stuck at zero, the system won't know when to regenerate. A simple reboot or reprogramming often gets things running again, but if the control board is fried, you'll need a replacement valve head.

Salt Bridges and Empty Brine Tanks

The second most common problem I see is a salt bridge. This is a hard crust that forms in the brine tank, usually a few inches below the surface, leaving a hollow space underneath. The system thinks there's salt, but the brine isn't being made because water can't reach the salt below the bridge. You can check by gently pushing a broom handle down into the tank. If it breaks through a layer, you've found your issue. Break up the bridge, remove the chunks, and let the tank refill. The other issue is running completely out of salt. It sounds obvious, but I've seen it plenty of times. If the tank is empty or the salt level is below the water line, no brine gets made and regeneration becomes pointless. Keep the salt level at least a quarter full, and use high-purity softener salt to reduce bridging and buildup.

Clogged Injector and Brine Line Problems

Even if the brine tank looks fine, the system can fail to draw brine during regeneration if the injector or brine line is clogged. The injector is a small nozzle that uses water flow to create suction and pull brine into the resin tank. Over time, sediment, iron, or salt debris can block it. On most valves, the injector is accessible by removing a cap or cover on the control head. Pull it out and rinse it under water. If there's buildup, soak it in vinegar or use a pin to clear the orifice. Also check the brine line itself. If it's kinked, pinched, or clogged with salt residue, brine won't flow. I've found brine lines that were never fully connected after an install or that had floated out of position in the tank. Make sure the line reaches near the bottom of the brine well and that the float assembly moves freely.

Valve Failures and Mechanical Wear

If the timer, salt, and injector all check out, the issue may be internal to the valve. Drive motors can fail, gears can strip, or pistons can stick due to sediment or hard water scaling inside the valve body. Some valves have a manual regeneration button. Try initiating a cycle and listen. You should hear the motor engage and water start moving through the drain line. If nothing happens, the motor or position switch may be dead. If the motor runs but the valve doesn't advance through the cycles, there may be a mechanical jam or a broken cam. These repairs usually require either a rebuild kit or a full valve replacement.
